10 I The Lovell Chronicle I January 16, 2014 Lady Bulldogs power sweep two over weekend BY DAVID PECK It didn't take the Lovell Lady Bulldogs long to shake off the rust from the holiday break as they powered past a pair of opponents Friday and Saturday, both on the road. The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Greybull for their first conference game of the season and beat the hometown Lady Buffs 60-35, then made the trip across the moun- tain to meet the Wright Panthers in Big Horn, ripping the Panthers 73-24. Points didn't come easily for either team during the first half Friday, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to win by 25. Lovell outscored Greybull 11-8 in the first quarter and 8-7 in the second to lead by four at inter- mission, 19-15. "We were a little rusty from having three weeks off and the girls didn't appear to be in sync with each other," Coach Chris Ed- wards said. "Defensively, we con- trolled the flow of the game and applied pressure but didn't con- vert (steals). We didn't finish at the rim and made some poor deci- sions with the ball." The second half was all Lovell as the Lady Bulldogs outscored Greybull 41-20 - 25-7 in the fourth quarter alone. "We stressed at halftime to be more secure with the ball and to play with intensity," Edwards said. "I thought the girls came out with a more focused effort and created some turnovers. We held them scoreless for the first 4 minutes of the third quarter." Nine players scored for the Lady Bulldogs in the second half, and Lauren Hinckley finished with a team high 14 points, 11 in the second half. McArthur added 13 points, Kim Shumway 11, Re- asch 8 and Mykelle Nichols 6. "Every night four or five girls will score for us consistently," Ed- wards said. "That makes it diffi- cult for teams to plan defensively for us. We were also able to take the Stephens girl (Brett) out of the game and hold her to 6 points. I thought Chayli did a good job de- fending her." Reasch led the Lady Bulldogs NATHAN OSTER Lovell sophomore Mykelle Nichols brings the ball up the court during Lovell's 60-35 win over Greybull Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs host Thermopolis Friday for another conference game. with 15 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Nichols and Hinckley finished with four assists each, and McArthur grabbed nine re- bounds, Shumway eight, Savan- na Savage six and Nichols five. "Emilee controlled the paint," Edwards said. "We are able to gamble a little bit defensively knowing Emilee is on the back side and is able to rotate and pro- tect the basket." The box score: LOVELL (80) Madison Harper 0 0-0 0, Mykelle Nichols 3 0-0 6, Kassi Renner 1 0-0 2, Savanna Savage 1 0-1 2, Lauren Hinckley 4 5-5 14, Chayli McArthur 5 3-6 13, Charri McArthur 1 0-0 2, Mercedes Haney 1 0-0 2, Kim Shumway 2 7-8 11, Emilee Reasch 4 0-0 8. WIN OVER WRIGHT Saturday found the top- ranked Lady Bulldogs traveling to Big Horn to meet Wright, the game being played in Big Horn because Wright was hosting the Wright Duals wrestling tourna- ment the same day. The Lady Bulldogs picked up right where they left off and blitzed the Panthers 31-10 in the first quarter en route to a 73-24 win. "Our play in the second half Friday carried over into Satur- day," Edwards said. "The girls looked confident. Defensively, we created h'avoc for them, mixing our full-court man and zone pres- sures. Our girls were able to steal in-bound passes and get steals at half court and also able to get de- fensive boards and get out in tran- sition. We just ran by 'em. "The girls also did an amaz- ing job moving the ball to the open spot and getting high-percentage shots, which led us to shoot 14 for 20 in the first quarter." Chayli McArthur thrived in the pressure, up-tempo game, scoring 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter. Lovell continued to pull away, outscoring Wright 16-5 in the sec- ond to lead 47-15 at halftime. Ed- wards pulled the starters about a minute and a half into the second half, but the Lady Bulldogs forced a running clock shortly thereafter by gaining a 40-point lead. Lovell outscored Wright 19-4 in the third to lead 66-19 and 7-5 in the fourth. Nine girls scored for Lovell. "The bench girls came in and continued playing at a high level," Edwards said. "We're fortunate to have that depth." Noting that the Lady Bull- dogs finished with 23 assists, the coach added, "The girls believe in each other and are trusting each other. They're focused right now." Chayli McArthur finished with 19 points, Hinckley 12, Re- asch 10, Savage and Shumway 8 each, Nichols and Charri McAr- thur 6 apiece.
