12 I The Lovell Chronicle I January 16, 2014 Bulldogs split road games, playing better BY DAVID PECK After three weeks of practice over the holi- days, the Lovell Bulldogs showed improvement in their first games of the New Year, giving a battle to sec- ond-ranked Greybull in Greybull Friday night and beating the Wright Pan- thers Saturday. The Bulldogs struggled offensively in the first half Friday, hitting only three baskets en route to 8 points, but hung in the game thanks to solid defense as Greybull led 16-8 at half- time. But Greybull powered past the Bulldogs 25-12 in the third quarter to take a 41-20 lead after three be- fore the Bulldogs turned the tables with a 22-10 fourth-quarter comeback. "That's been our Achil- les heel so far, our third quarters," Coach Craig Lundberg said. "We seem to come out a little bit fiat. That's when Greybull made their big run on us. "We weren't turning the ball over. We were able to get real good looks at the basket. But we missed 11 layups or bunnies over the course of the game. Those are points that are gim- mes. You lose those and it takes the wind out of your sail. But the kids played with tons of effort, tons of hustle." Lundberg said he was glad to see his team score 10 second-chance points off of offensive rebounds and was proud of the way the team rallied in the fourth quarter. "We played Greybull re- ally tough," he said. "I'm ex- tremely excited about the improvement we're mak- ing. I feel bad for the boys who are working so hard in practice and in the game but not having the fun part of it because the winning hasn't started yet. But I wouldn't want to coach any other team so far. They're doing some good things." Mysen McArthur led the Bulldogs with 13 points, and Brandon Wolvington added 9, Calin McArthur 6. Mysen McArthur led the team with nine rebounds, and Wolvington grabbed eight. Chase Tippetts had five steals, Beau Green four assists to lead the team. WIN OVER WRIGHT The Bulldogs survived a very physical game in Big Horn against the Wright Panthers Saturday, Lund- berg said, with referees calling a tight game and calling 52 fouls in the game. "I'd call it a hack fest. That's basically what it was," Lundberg said. "There were 29 fouls called in the first half. The refs called it extremely tight. But it was good for our kids to be able to play through it. I'm sure everybody in the gym was just as frus- trated as the kids. It start- ed affecting the game and the kids' play on the court, for both sides, though there weren't as many calls in the second half." Lovell and Wright were tied 7-7 after the first quar- ter and was close for about three quarters. Lovell out- scored Wright 13-7 in the second to lead 20-14 at half- time and led 31-26 after three before pulling away with a 15-7 fourth-quarter advantage. Wolvington led the team with 12 points, and Nic Haskell added 9, Calin McArthur 6 and Mysen McArthur 5. Wolvington grabbed 10 rebounds. HOME AGAIN The Bulldogs will host Thermopolis Friday night for what Lundberg called "a huge game for us." Like the Bulldogs, Thermop is 0-1 in the conference so far, and neither team wants to drop to the bottom of the pack. Tip-off times are 4 (JV) and 7 p.m. at Winterholler Gym. Saturday, the Bulldogs travel to Cody to meet the Class 3A Broncs at 4 (JV) and 7:30 p.m. We're Online at www.haskellfurnituR.net delivet available.
