LovellChronicle.com February 25, 2009 I The Lovell Chronicle I 13 2A Regional wrestling BY DAVID PECK The small but mighty Rocky Mountain Grizzly wrestling team placed sev- en wrestlers in the top six at the 2A West Regional Wres- tling Tournament in Grey- bull Friday and Saturday, including champions JR Vezain and Kaleb Hoyt. Senior Vezain won his third regional title in four seasons, going 3-0 to win the title at 140 pounds. Hoyt, a junior, won his first ti- tle with a 3-0 mark at 160 pounds. Freshman Jake Jones placed second at 119 pounds, freshman Benjamin Man- cuso fourth at 135 pounds, junior Guy Jones fourth at 152, sophomore Justin Aa- gard sixth at 152 and senior Casey Pickett sixth at 189. As a team, the Grizzlies placed a solid sixth with 100.5 team points, 25 points ahead of seventh-place Big Piney and just 10 points behind fifth-place Saratoga. Greybull/Riverside won the team title with 214.5 points, followed by Cokeville with 173.5 and Lovell with 134.5. Vezain powered to the title at 140 pounds, pinning Cody Klaproth of Shoshoni in 2:14, beating Ben Cuch of Lovell 12-1 and crushing Jacob Beck of Lovell 17-2 for the title. He improved his season record to 25-1. Hoyt beat Ryan Croft of Lovell 15-9, Jon Borah of Hanna-Elk Mountain 17-2 and Chayce Goton of Grey- bull/Riverside 5-4 for the title. He is now 35-5 on the season. Jake Jones pinned Li- onzo Escobido of Saratoga in 5:15 and Anthony Samson of Saragota in 3:00 to advance to the title match, where he fell to Max Vichi of Big Pin- ey 7-3. He carries a 29-7 sea- son record. Mancuso continued to raise eyebrows as his im- provement continues. He lost on a 44-second pin to Berto Soto of Saratoga in the first round, then battled back to pin Brody Rooks of Big Piney in 58 seconds and John Bartlett of Dubois in 2:20 before falling to Soto again in the match for third and fourth, 15-4. Guy Jones won his opening match, edging Jes- se Chestnut of Greybull/Riv- erside 5-2, falling to Hadley Harmon of Cokeville on a pin in 3:02 and stopping team- mate Aagard in 2:55. In the third-fourth match, he lost a 10-6 decision to Dino Collins of Lovell. Pickett lost to McKay Tonga of Cokeville on a pin in 3:17, then pinned Wy- att Houston of Hanna-Elk Mountain to reach the med- al rounds. He lost to Darren Ballard of Lovell 22-7 and to Coleman Stander of Wind River 15-3 to place sixth. Aagard also placed sixth, although he wrestled to a 0-3 record. Tournament in Cody The Lovell and Rocky Mountain Middle School wrestling teams con- cluded the 2009-10 season at the con- ference tournament in Cody Saturday, and coaches Doug Hazen and Louis Kousoulos have presented the results of their various students. The Bulldogs will now compete in the Wyoming State Wrestling Tourna- ment Friday and Saturday at the Casper Events Cen- ter. Wrestling begins Friday at 9 a.m. and continues Sat- urday at 9 a.m. Lovell tied for third in the team standings with Thermopolis, Hazen said. Hopkin lost that match but came back to beat Justin An- guard of Rocky Mountain for fifth place. Collins (152) had two byes and a loss to bring him to the match he won against Hopkin. He beat Rocky Mountain wrestler Guy Jones 10-6 for third place. Eli Moody (160) lost one battle, then beat Ryan Cas- tle before being pinned by a Kemmerer grappler for sixth place. Mayes said it next match against Randall Johns of Greybull for fifth. Darren Ballard (189) went 1-1 in the regular bracket and 1-1 in the con- solation for fourth place. Adam Beck (130) was 0-2, Ethan Croft (145) 0-2, Ryan Croft (160) 0-2, Jared Asay (215) beat two opponents, bringing him to the finals against ri- val Wes Ridgway of Grey- bull. Ridgway won 19-11 and Asay took second. Mayes said Asay made a few mistakes, but had the Greybull wrestler on his back once during the match. He said coaches still expect Asay to place high at State. Mayes said the current team is full of good kids and he thinks they will do well at State. At practice, they are working on getting more proficient at moves and don't have to worry too much about staying in shape at this point in the season.
