Pre-diabetes to be discussed at next
diabetes support group meeting
Diabetes is a chronic disease that
affects 25 million Americans. The
American Diabetes Association re-
ports that 18.8 million Americans are
diagnosed, and about 7 million are
not yet diagnosed. Not even added
into these statistics are the 79 million
Americans who are currently living
with a condition called "pre-diabetes."
A huge number of people, 79 mil-
lion, are headed down the road of a de-
bilitating chronic disease. That's the
bad news.
The good news is that even
though millions of people are cur-
rently on that road, they are not nec-
essarily doomed to arrive at the desti-
nation of diabetes. By implementing
some lifestyle changes, which will in-
clude diet and exercise, diabetes can
be avoided altogether or at least put
off for years.
"Pre-diabetes" is diagnosed
when blood glucose is higher than
normal, but not high enough for a
diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It is a
red flag, a big warning sign that can
and should be taken as an opportu-
nity for improvement. There is sci-
entific proof that when individuals
take charge of their lives, determine
to live healthfully, and then consis-
tently adhere to that commitment,
their risk of developing diabetes is
significantly lowered.
North Big Horn Hospital spon-
sors a diabetes support group, which
meets the first Thursday of every
month at 1 p.m. For this month only,
the date has been changed to March
8 at 1 p.m. The public is invited to
attend this meeting on March 8 and
participate in education and a dis-
cussion on the importance of recog-
nizing and controlling a pre-diabet-
ic condition. The meeting will be in
the multipurpose room at New Hori-
zons Care Center.
