www. LovellCh ronicle.com April 1, 2010 I The Lovell Chronicle I 15 Check online for lost and adoptable pets BY BRAD DEVEREAUX Homeless pets in the Lovell area will now be more connected to potential own- ers, after the Lovell Police Department began posting pictures online of animals available for adoption. The LPD is using www. !Petfmder.com, the old- est and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet, according to a company press release. The site is updated contin- "uously and currently has -more than 317,870 home- less pets listed. Love]] Chief of Police Nick Lewis said a citizen suggested using the online service to promote the adop- :tion of pets from the Lovell 'facility. Lewis and Animal :Control Officer Phil Angell Uscussed the idea and de- :cided it could help reduce :the number of unclaimed :animals that must be eu- thanized. "Euthanization is the last resort, but it's the re- ality of having a shelter," Lewis said. The Website is free to be a member of, and Lewis said the department would update it every morning with any new animals in the shelter. He said the minimal amount of time it takes the LPD staff to take and upload photographs is worth it if fewer animals are put to death. The site will be a great resource for local people who have lost their dog, and also far away Web browsers who want to adopt a new pet. Lewis said the LPD will pay for ship- ping the animal as long as the adopters send a cage for transportation. He said the new online initiative fits perfectly with the LPD's efforts to reduce paper waste. Other area shelters on Petfinder.com include Three Dog Rescue and the Park County Animal Shel- ter, both in Cody. More than 12,900 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada and other countries post their pets on the site. Pets available from the Lovell facility can be viewed through a search at www.Petfinder.com or at www.Petfinder.com/shel- ters/WY61.html. Visitors can search for adoptable pets from around the coun- try on the site. Petfmder.com was cre- ated in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jar- ed and Betsy Saul to end the euthanasia of adopt- able pets. Since its incep- tion, the site has facilitated approximately 20 million adoptions, according to the release. Blood drive Wednesday United Blood Services will hold the Lovell Community blood drive on Wednesday, April 7, from 1 to 6 p.m., at the Lovell Fire Hall. Potential donors must be at least 16 (with parental con- sent form for 16 and 17 year olds), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and bring picture identification. To schedule a donation appoint- ment, log on to www.bloodhero.com (sponsor code: lovell) or call Shauna at 548-6169. Please eat a full meal and drink plenty of water before coming to the blood drive. Mustang Center welcomes new volunteers The Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center is looking for volunteers to help the center do a better job of helping the horses and the visitors who come to watch them. Volunteers are always needed to man the desk at the center outside of Lovell, and now anyone who likes to get out on the range is needed as the center aims to revitalize a mustang watch group. Anyone interested in volunteer- ing should attend a meeting Thursday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the.PMWMC. Contact the center at 548-WILD for more information.
