Big Horn County Fair
Ranch versatility contest added to fair lineup
BY BRAD DEVEREAUX
With just months be-
fore the Big Horn County
Fair Aug. 2-8, organizers
are working in high gear to
finalize events and prepare
the fair book for publishing.
The Big Horn County Fair
Board met Monday, April
12, at Big Horn Federal in
Lovell to discuss several
items in preparation of the
2010 county fair.
The ranch versatil-
ity contest will be a new
event for 2010. The board
discussed adding the event
that would award ribbons
and prizes to the top horse-
men for a combined score
in the events of cow horse,
trail, halter, reining and
roping.
Because cow horse,
trail, halter and reining
are already events, the
only event to be added is
roping. Roping would con-
sist of a stationary dum-
my calf that competitors
would rope from horseback,
while young competitors
would be allowed to stand.
Dale Clark previously noti-
fied the board that he was
willing to organize the new
event and supply prizes.
Willie Bridges report-
ed on the status of funding
for a new covered show are-
na. Bridges said because of
competition and decreased
funding of the State Loan
and Investment Board, it is
a tough time to get grants
from the State. He said he
is in the process of apply-
ing for a grant through the
Daniels Fund and looking
for other funding sources to
fund the project.
"I'd rather go another
year and get what we want
than to band-aid this up,"
Bridges said in response to
a question about rehabili-
tating existing facilities.
"I know it seems like
we've waited a long time,
but why not wait a little lon-
ger?" Matty Moody agreed.
"People are excited
.a,bout thin, project, " Bridges
said. "cdn't want to give
up on it. We're moving for-
ward, just slower than be-
fore."
The board talked about
changes to the lease agree-
ment that renters sign for
the fairgrounds, hall and
arena.
The board discussed
a new rental agreement
drafted by County Attorney
Georgia Antley Hunt. The
board decided to instruct
secretary Vangi Hackney to
add a few other items to the
lease agreement and send it
back to Hunt.
The board agreed that
there could be a flat fee for
renting the hall, but not for
the arena and fairgrounds,
which would vary depend-
ing on the type of event.
Dallen Smith comment-
ed that he would like to see
more details about expecta-
tions of cleaning rented fa-
cilities in the future. Bridg-
es said responsibilities of
renters would be spelled
out in the new contract.
The board made a mo-
tion to allow the county gov-
ernment to use fair build-
ings for no charge except a
refundable cleaning depos-
it. The county government
would be required to sign
a lease agreement like any
other renter.
In other board happen-
ings Monday:
*The board discussed
vendor fees for the 2010
county fair, but did not
make a motion to set fees.
*The board decided on
black and white tri-fold bro-
chures for the fair.
*The board set fees for
campaigning at the fair.
Politicians will pay $100 for
a table and $250 for a sign
for the week.
oMitch Shelhamer re-
ported that the Bulls and
Barrels event is planned
for Friday, May 28, at the
fairgrounds. The event will
consist of bull riding and
barrels, with two or three
sections and a short go for
each event. He said the
event will "pay pretty well"
and will be fast-paced with
loud rock music.
*The board discussed
the possibility of having
go-kart races at the fair-
grounds. Howard Gernant
said representatives of a go-
kart company in Powell are
coming in May to talk about
what type of event would be
possible.
