Weighing in at 117.5 pounds and measuring 54.5 inches long, this paddlefish
caught by Frannie resident Paul Muller is the biggest one ever brought to the
intake station in Glendive, Mont., according to Muller and his brothers, who
take an annual trip to snag paddlefish on the Yellowstone River near Sidney,
Mont. Snagged in the river by a cast hook, Muller said the fish contained 27
pounds of caviar, which was donated to the intake station.
Hawkins 'checks out' from Big Horn County Library
BY KARLA POMEROY
After 27 years work-
mg for the Big Horn Coun-
ty Library system, Director
Becky Hawkins is retiring
at the end of the month or
early next month.
Hawkins said her ex-
act date is up in the air as
she has agreed to help with
the transition of a nw di-
rector. Big Horn County
Library Board President
Dawn Hoffman announced
this week that Julia Kelso
has been hired as the new
director. Kelso, an alum-
nus of Hot Springs County
High School in Thermopo-
lis, is currently working
in Washington State and
should be here the first
week of June.
Hawkins began work-
ing for the library system as
a part-time employee at the
Greybull Library in 1984.
She worked 11 hours a week
for 14 years, she said.
"Betty Winterhol-
ler kept pushing me to
come over here (to Basin),"
Hawkins said. She said she
decided to take a position
as cataloguer at the Basin
Library for more hours in
1998, eventually moving up
to assistant director after
Winterholler retired.
Then in 200i, when Di-
rector Sandra Munger left,
the board hired a gentle-
man who never showed up
for the position.
"The board asked if
I would take the job. Ini-
tially, I didn't want the job
but after much soul search-
ing and (her husband) Bob
Becky Hawkins
pushing me I took the job."
She added, "It was good
for me. It got me out of my
comfort zone. I was manag-
ing 18 people, taking care of
boilers and ordering books."
As director, Hawkins over-
sees the six branches -- Ba-
sin, Greybull, Lovell, Deav-
er, Frannie and Hyattville.
Over the past 10 years
as director Hawkins has
seen a few major changes.
The biggest change, she
said, came last year with
the expansion of the Lovell
Library. The libraries have
also gone wireless.
"Keeping up with tech-
nology has been the hardest
thing and keeping our com-
puters up to date," Hawkins
said.
Hawkins said she had
an advantage of being di-
rector during the county's
healthy financial years that
helped ge t several projects
completed.
"One of the great things
I'm going to miss is getting
to know the people in the
state," Hawkins said. She
said with everyone's sys-
tems tied together so peo-
ple can search for any book
in the state, she got to know
other librarians and direc-
tors around the state.
Hawkins also saw the
library reach 100,000 books
circulated in a year. "We'd
been hovering in the 90,000
for a couple years and
two years ago we reached
100,000. It's gone back
down a little bit," she said.
So why is Hawkins say-
ing goodbye to the library
system now? She said after
a recent neck surgery, it has
become too hard to sit most
of the day at her desk. "I've
also met the Rule 85 so that
helped, too," she said. (Rule
85 in the State of Wyoming
retirement system allows a
person to retire if his or her
age and number of years
worked equals 85.)
What will she do with
her free time? Read, of
course. "I want to catch up
on reading a lot of books
that I haven't had time to
read yet. I might follow Bob
around (with Sky Aviation).
I have a son in Connecticut
and two grandkids in Ari-
zona I only see a couple of
times a year. My sister and
I like to travel.",
Best of all, "I'm going
to enjoy getting up in the
morning and not have to go
to work," she said.
Hawkins will be honored
by the board with an open
house retirement party from
3-6 p.m., Friday, June 10, at
the Greybull Library.
