DUP opens new year
The Daughters of Utah Pio-
neers Big Horn Company/Sage-
brush Camp began the new
season with a delightful salad
luncheon on the 9th of Septem-
ber hosted by the committee of
Colleen Lewis, Marge Stevens
and Shirley Busteed.
The meeting began with
President Mary Jensen con-
ducting. Historian WillaDene
Kraft gave the patriotic pre-
sentation citing Constitutional
second and fifth amendments.
Business announcements in-
cluded organizational chang-
es: Shirley Busteed as company
chaplain, Sandy Messick as pio-
neer stories remembered leader
and Patty Hansen as new com-
munications advisor as well as
details concerning the conven-
tion on Friday, Sept. 13.
A short pioneer history of
Robert Moncur, who was born
in Scotland and immigrated
to the United States by way of
New Orleans to St. Louis and
arriving in Utah in 1852, was
given by WillaDene Kraft. He
helped to turn the barren des-
ert on the Kanab area into a
rose and in later years moved to
Lovell and then to Idaho where
his last years were spent.
Pioneer stories remem-
bered was given by Patty Han-
sen about Martha Ann Smith
Harris, a daughter of Hyrum
and Mary Fielding Smith.
Guest speaker Joyce Johnson
of Burlington spoke about the
Charles William Penrose cab-
in, which is a DUP museum lo-
cated in Farmington, Utah, and
which was moved numerous
times before 1980 when it ar-
rived at its present location. A
short history of his life included
that he was only able to attend
school in England until he was
10 years old.
He started composing
words at an early age, which
he would sing to a popular tune
of the day. These later became
beloved hymns in the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-
Saints. While still in England
he married Lucetta Stratford
in 1855. The Penrose fami-
ly sailed to the USA in 1861,
when they settled in Farming-
ton, Utah.
In 1880 he was asked by
Brigham Young to be the edi-
tor of the Deseret News. When
Utah achieved statehood, he
was elected to the legislature
and helped write the constitu-
tion for the state. In 1904 he
was called to become a mem-
ber of the Church's Quorum of
the Twelve and in 1907 he was
called as second counselor to
President Joseph F. Smith. He
died on May 16, 1925, at the
age of 93.
Herren joins staff at Rocky Mountain High School
BY PATTI CARPENTER
Keesha Herren is a new par-
aeducator in the special educa-
tion department at Rocky Moun-
tain High School. Herren said she
is already enjoying working close-
ly with three students in the pro-
gram. This is her first year working
as a paraeducator.
"It's like having three more
kids, in addition to my own four
children," she said.
"I really am enjoying the one-
on-one," said Herren. "It's very edu-
cational. I've learned a lot already.
My jobs before had nothing to do
with special education so coming
into this I've learned so much. We
do a lot of social events with the
students like bringing them into
classrooms where they can be with
their peers. We work with them to
advance their knowledge and skills
and their ability to take care of
themselves."
Herren studied three different
subject areas at Northwest College
including math for secondary edu-
cation, elementary education and
special education. She also studied
Keesha Herren
autism.
Prior to accepting her new po-
sition, Herren worked as a substi-
tute teacher in the regular class-
room and in the special education
department.
"It's a lot of fun to work with
the special education students,"
said Herren. "It's fun to see how
they work around their problems
and try different approaches to get
the problem solved. All of these
kids are very smart. Each one is
smart in their own way."
She and her husband Kent
Herren have four girls who attend
the sixth, third, second and first
grades.
Herren said, that she is very
sympathetic to §pecial needs stu-
dents because one of her own chil-
dren has special needs.
"I don't think we have more
special education problems than
in the past," she said. "I think we
are just more advanced now in be-
ing able to identify these problems.
We can find these problems soon-
er and as teachers, doctors or par-
ents can do something to help these
children."
Herren said she plans to get
her teaching credential online
while she continues to work as a
paraeducator.
