A group of 42 people embarked on a bus
tour, on Sept. 24, that included a stop at the
old Kane town site, the Mason-Lovell ranch
and the Kane-Ionia cemetery. Kane history
aficionados Karen Ellis Spragg, Betty Beech
Hubbell, Sharon Gams Cornwall and Mollie
Gams Olson acted as tour guides. Over the
course of the day the four, who are all from
the Kane area, acted as tour guides and took
turns sharing the colorful history of the area
with participants.
The tour, which was sponsored by the
Homesteader Museum in Powell, attracted
participants from Cody, Powell, Byron and
Lovell.
"Some were descendents of Kane rela-
tives and some just didn't know the history
of Kane and wanted to know more about it,"
said Spragg. Spragg is the president of the
board of directors for the Lovell-Kane Mu-
seum project.
The tour began at the site where the
town of Kane once stood. The speakers took
turns discussing the lives of well-known his-
torical figures from the area.
Participants heard the story of how Ste-
ven Pete Gervay froze to death on a hunt-
ing trip in the Big Horns after leaving his
pregnant wife to fend for herself. They also
heard the story of the hermit John Blue and
saw a photograph of the stone house he lived
in. They heard the tragic story of how a dis-
traught woman named Matilda Waters shot
her own children before shooting herself in
the early 1900s.
The tour took an interesting turn when
the group reached the Kane/Ionia cemetery.

that has been used for centuries to locate
water and graves. The technique involves
holding rods over a suspected gravesite.
Some believe that the rods will not only
point to where the bodies are buried but will
also identify whether the interred are male
or female. Kessel learned the technique
while on a genealogy research trip in South
Dakota.
She demonstrated the technique for the
group at the Kane/Ionia cemetery and even
let some try their hand at the technique.
"Some were skeptical when the dem-
onstration first started but got converted I
think," said Spragg.
The group hopes to offer the trip again
next spring.
"It was a fun day and everyone was re-
ceptive," said Spragg.
