This car got the worst of it when it slid into a light pole on West Main in Lovell
last Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 4. Annie Hatch, 31, of Lovell was the driver
and was briefly trapped by the airbag, which had deployed. Here, emergency
personnel work to free Hatch from her car.

Police report

About a dozen firefighters from Lovell's
volunteer fire department responded to
a hay and equipment fire on Saturday at
around noon at the Ellis farm west of Cow-
ley. According to Captain Bob Mangus, the
fire started in a makeshift shelter that the
Ellis family had constructed out of square
bales of straw while repairing a front-end
loader.
Mangus said a spark from the equip-
ment that Larry Ellis was trying to start
may have ignited loose hay and straw and
the bales. He said it took firefighters con-
siderable time to move highly flammable
hay and other materials away from the
source of the fire.
"It takes a long time any time you're
dealing with a hay fre," said Mangus.
"That's just the way it is."
Mangus said the bales that made up
the structure actually contained the fire
for a short period of time, which allowed
his team some time to move other flamma-
ble materials away from the flames. Man-
